It is vitally important to do a skin self-examination four times a year.
Observe and note all moles, freckles, blemishes or other unusual marks on the body including scalp or genitals. Take a mirror and a ruler and note the color, size (in millimeters) and shape of all marks. For hard to see areas, have your spouse or significant other observe and note these marks on the sheets provided on this page. If you notice any change in the markings (increased growth, shape or color) from month to month make a note to inform your physician immediately. Early detection is key in the treatment of melanoma.
